Old abandoned rail cars like these are an all too frequent reminder of both our storied past with the glory of rail travel and our shameful neglect of this important form of transportation.
Kudos to President Obama and Vice President Biden for their announcement on January 28 that $8 billion in stimulus funds would now be going to projects to promote intercity high speed rail. It is long overdue. One needs to think back only a few short years ago when President Bush proposed a budget that would completely zero out Amtrak, our only interstate rail program in the nation which has already been hobbled by inadequate funding for far too long.
So President Obama’s announcement, first mentioned in his State Of The Union Address, was a welcome signal to rail passengers, environmentalists and mass transit proponents.
Thank you President Obama!
